Be green.period. is an online campaign to encourage menstruating humans to be conscious of how our menstrual products can impact the environment. So join us in lessening our wasteful load on the planet by giving a menstrual cup a go! Lets normalise the use of reusable menstrual products and in doing so use menstruation as a means to mitigate climate change.
Introducing the environmentally conscious menstrual cup:
The menstrual cup is a reusable alternative to disposable menstrual products - such as tampons and sanitary towels - which currently saturate the market. Consumer choice has been restricted in the past due to a lack of awareness and advertisement of alternative menstrual products beyond single-use supplies. So before your next shop for your menstrual products, take into consideration the following:
They're greener
Every time you purchase another pack of tampons or sanitary towels, be mindful of the fact that they will inevitably end up in landfill sites, waiting to decompose for centuries beyond your own lifespan. Each menstruating human uses approximately 11,000-15,000 tampons in their life, which is proving to be an increasingly unsustainable option for the planet.
In fact, if just 1 million of us switched to menstrual cups, we would be able to prevent 240 million tampons and their accompanying packaging from reaching the landfill every year.
They're safer
Menstrual cups, depending on the brand, can be worn safely for up to 12 hours. In addition to this they are free from: chemicals, bleaches, fibres and BPA which benefits women prone to sensitivity or allergic reactions.
They're cheaper (in the long run)
Dependent on the brand, menstrual cups range from £19.99 to £24.99. This may seem like a big investment at the time, but that's until you realise that they last for up to a decade! So making the switch from disposable to reusable products actually has an economic as well as an environmental incentive. You could even reinvest the money you save into making another lifestyle change to further mitigate climate change, the more the merrier!
So as you can see, the menstrual cup is a sustainable solution to combat society's current disposable culture and take a step towards mitigating climate change. The menstrual product industry has contributed to the degradation the planet in the past, so it's time for us now to reverse this and take accountability for our planet as well as our bodies.
