My Mooncup: An Honest Review

I'm not going to lie, a year ago the thought of using a menstrual cup horrified me. I had no idea how they worked or even simply why any one on Earth would want to use one in the first place!! Months later, stumbling across the internet I happened upon a raving review from a blogger talking about how it had changed their life... and that wasn't the only one!

After sifting through glowing article after glowing article I was beginning to open up to the idea but it wasn't until months later that I finally decided to take the plunge and buy my own Mooncup.

The Good:

With a busy uni/work schedule looming I decided to order my Mooncup from their website. At £19.99 (why is it that free delivery always legitimises any online spending?!) the cup was a complete bargain. Mooncup suggest on their website that the cup actually pays for itself after 6-8 months, meaning after this time you will be making a monthly saving... bonus!

It arrived a few days later with a discreet cotton bag and had very minimal packaging, true to their style. Did you know? Mooncup were actually the first sanitary protection manufacturer to be awarded the Ethical Business Status for its environmentally friendly practices.

One of the most positive aspects I have found so far is how great it feels to finally be able to (#) ditch the disposables! I found myself taking my contraceptive pill consecutively just to avoid my period each month. Disposables always felt so wasteful, but for most of my life I didn't even know there were alternatives. Mooncup suggest that the average menstruating human will use over 11,000 disposable menstrual products in their lifetime. It feels like such a positive change to be able to help the environment & reduce climate change just by changing up my monthly routine.

The Not So Good:

I mean we most of us will have uttered the words "I love a challenge" or "I love learning new things" in an interview or perhaps on our CVs, but really? Maybe not! I think its safe to say that it takes some serious motivation to get menstrual cup savvy (...and a lot of panicked googling!). It was so difficult to get into the swing of inserting & removing the cup. Perseverance is key here, it takes less time & effort each day! On day one I was overwhelmingly negative but by day three I found myself raving about it to my boyfriend - even he seemed convinced by the end of my rambles.

At first I did find it to be super uncomfortable, especially when walking. Luckily I figured out the problem and decided to trim the stem of the cup. As soon as that was done I literally could not feel a thing and I've noticed such a big difference in my comfort this cycle! It's still not super comfortable to remove, but the Mooncup has a wider rim than other cups so this is normal.

You do get quite up close and personal with your own blood, so if you're squeamish this might take some getting used to, but it's actually not quite as bad as you would expect! I haven't braved a public bathroom yet and I'm not sure I'll ever bother! I would recommend changing in the shower to avoid all the hassle altogether if you can.

Overall I'm feeling very period positive this month thanks to the Mooncup, but I'm not yet a fully fledged convert! I'm definitely going to keep using it and I can't see myself going back to disposables at all. But, after being lucky enough to see the recent demo cups sent to us for our campaign I am definitely considering investing in another brand to see if their shape/flexibility suits my body type slightly more.
